One of the first funny stories that happened to us occurred at Sonic and it was so odd that we actually wrote it down while we were still parked there.
It was summertime, and Sonic was running its Summer of Shakes promotion where they have a bunch of new milkshake flavors, and they're half price after 8 p.m.
Ryan was still pretty little so we're thinking this might have been the summer of 2013. We worked hard to get him asleep before 8 so that we could leave him with Mimi at her house and go get milkshakes.
Once we succeeded in getting him to sleep, we were excited to go get our rewards! By the time we pulled into the Sonic in Shawnee, we were already giddy. (Side note: Sonic was founded in Shawnee. It was originally called Top Hat, but the first Sonic opened in Shawnee).
We both ordered the same size milkshake, but we ordered different flavors - PB&J and PB and Bacon, if we remember right. Since we were both paying with our debit cards, we had two separate orders.
But when the carhop brought out our shakes, she asked for two different amounts. We explained to her that since the shakes were the same size, they should be the same price.
Mind you - since it was after 8, these shakes were supposed to cost about $1.50 each. So we were arguing over like .50 cents. But it was - and always is - the principle of the matter.
As Angelica said at the time, the carhop "probably thinks we're high. 'Look at that mom and daughter get right together and come to Sonic and act up.'" We get that a lot. People tend to assume that Angelica is the mother, and Alissa is the daughter. In terms of biology, it's not impossible. We are 17 and a half years a part. But we don't look enough alike to realistically be mother and daughter. Alissa is 5' 11", and Angelica is 5' 8". Alissa has straight brown hair, and Angelica has wavy blonde/brown hair.
Anyway, once the carhop understood that we weren't okay with paying two different prices for two identical items, she agreed to go back inside and come back with matching totals.
But here is the kicker. We exchanged milkshakes for debit cards because she was going to fix the totals and run the cards on the same trip, but as she was turning to go back inside - debit cards in hand - she made us promise not to drive off without paying.
Let that sink in.
Our carhop thought we would drive off without paying $3 for our milkshakes AND without our debit cards.
In no world are two Sonic milkshakes worth the headache and hassle of reporting TWO debit cards as lost or stolen to the bank, requesting new ones, waiting for ten days for the bank to mail them to us, and then updating any automatic withdrawal accounts like Netflix - because I'm not about to lose my Netflix over $3.
And if we were going to try to pull that off, it wouldn't be for just milkshakes! We would have ordered hundreds of dollars worth of food off the Sonic menu...
She did eventually come back with matching totals and two debit cards, but it took her awhile, and it almost wasn't even worth the hassle by the time we'd resolved the whole issue.
This poor carhop couldn't do anything right because after all was said and done, she didn't even give us straws.
